Why Choose Cappello Family Dental for Dental Checkups & Cleanings?

Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Many patients ask us, “If I brush and floss at home, why is getting a checkup and cleaning every six months so important?” It’s a good question, and we have a good answer! First, it’s important to know that we screen for more than just cavities and gum disease during your exam. We also look for warning signs of oral cancer, allowing us to catch it in the earliest possible stage. It’s also worth noting that while the oral hygiene products you have at home can remove food particles and debris, only the tools at our office can remove plaque and tartar. As a result, your biannual visits to our office are essential for preserving your healthy smile for decades to come.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Dental checkups look slightly different from patient to patient. For example, if it’s your first time visiting us, your appointment will likely begin with X-rays and a chat with Dr. William J. Cappello so he can get to know you better and learn about your dental history. If you’re a long-time patient, however, then he will catch up with you while completing your oral exam. This includes everything from feeling your lymph nodes and checking your existing restorations to looking at your teeth and gums. When he’s done, he’ll share his findings with you so you can have a discussion about your oral health.

The dental cleaning is when we will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, particularly the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. This involves using special tools to carefully remove plaque and tartar. Of course, we will also floss between your teeth and give them a good polish so they look great too. If we see anything noteworthy along the way, like an area of your mouth that needs to be cleaned better, we will let you know as well.
