Dental implants in Trumbull are a long-term commitment. If everything goes well, you can expect to have them for the rest of your life. Before you receive them, though, you might have questions about what you can expect once your new teeth are in place. What do dental implants feel like? Will you always notice their presence? Let’s talk about the answers to these questions.

How They Feel in the Mouth

After your dental implants are surgically placed into your jawbone, some soreness and swelling are to be expected. However, the soft tissue around the implantation sites should heal fairly quickly, and as long as you follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions, there should come a point where the surgical sites feel quite normal.

When you receive your implant restorations, your artificial teeth may feel odd in your mouth. You might also expect some extra saliva production, especially if you receive a relatively large restoration, such as an implant denture. This occurs because the restoration is a foreign object in your mouth.

Eating With Dental Implants

When you eat with your restorations, it may be wise to take it easy at first. For example, you should avoid testing your implants with hard or sticky food. Listen to your dentist’s dietary recommendations, and once you get used to your new teeth, you will be able to enjoy most foods with ease.

In fact, the bite force provided by dental implants is so strong that they can allow you to eat almost anything without taking any special precautions. This is in contrast to traditional dentures, which require that any hard foods be cut into small pieces prior to consumption and that the food be evenly distributed across both sides of the mouth.

How Do Implants Compare with Natural Teeth?

Most patients, after they adjust to life with their dental implants, don’t even notice their replacement teeth. That’s because implants are designed to feel as natural as possible. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely on the gums for support, dental implants replace missing teeth from the roots up. Because their structure is similar to that of natural teeth, they offer a high level of comfort.

What do dental implants feel like? To put it simply, they feel like teeth! If you would like more information about this treatment, your local implant dentist would be happy to speak with you.
